Congresswoman to introduce bill to ban pre-employment salary inquiries

The bill would prohibit employers from asking applicants for their salary history before making a job or salary offer.

The bill will mirror legislation that was recently enacted in Massachusetts and considered by state legislatures in California, Colorado and New York.

Lawmakers see the ban as an effort to close the gender and racial wage gap. By prohibiting companies from asking about an applicant’s salary history, the bill will look to relieve the pay disparities that have historically affected women and minorities from the onset of their careers by preventing employers from attempting to base a new salary on a previous one.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, along with original cosponsors Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), said they would introduce the measure after Congress returned from recess earlier this week.
